Without having a HUGE email list or an insane budget for an ad campaign, the only way in my opinion to reach a lot of people is viral marketing.
Successful viral marketing creates a snowball effect and it should feed itself allowing your viral campaign to build up speed and momentum.
The best viral campaigns are often accidental but the effect is the same. These are usually funny videos, or videos that capture a wide-appeal event. People watch them and SHARE them for others to watch. More and more people talk about it and share further.
This creates a viral effect that ends up reaching potentially thousands or even millions of people within a short amount of time.
HOWEVER, how can the likes of you and me create a similar effect?
How can the everyday person create some content that will go viral – enhancing a brand, company or event by getting it in front of thousands of people, quickly?
In this blog post I am going to share with you a case study from a viral campaign I created just yesterday – on Facebook.
The post was published 21 hours ago as of right now, and so far it has reached 17,591 people, had 3,002 engagements, 561 comments, and 480 shares.
This is increasing as I type this!
So, how did I do this and how can you replicate this for yourself, or a client.
Here’s the secret – Yet it is so simple. And although you will have seen something like this before, I have seen so many others leave out the vital ingredient.
Let me break the whole process down for you
First, you need to have an incentive for others to SHARE your post and follow your instructions. This is usually a chance to win something. In my case study it is RIDE TICKETS for an annual LOCAL fair / carnival that my father organizes each and every year.
The incentive has to be enough for people to…
Tag TWO people in the comments, and SHARE the post on their timeline (in Facebook).
If the incentive isn’t strong enough, they won’t participate.
My post offers them 10 free ride tickets for a carnival that is taking place in just 2 days time (from me posting). This means they don’t have to wait long for their incentive if they win.
In fact, below is a screenshot of my post just 43 minutes after publishing it.
As you can see above, after just 43 minutes it had already reached 1,637 people, had 486 engagements, 110 comments, 58 Likes, and 98 shares.
Not bad, eh?
You’ll notice that the image I used gets straight to the point. It shows a fairground ride and the HOOK… my incentive is written in the center of the image.
It’s also important to include your incentive right at the start of your posts text. This hooks them in.
This needs to be followed with simple instructions on how they can enter.
This has to be simple and clear. Don’t over complicate this by asking them to tag more people, or to also LIKE your post.
People will naturally LIKE your post anyway so you don’t need to ask them to. It will have little impact on your results, and the more hoops you make them jump through, the more likely they won’t participate.
Why Do they Need to TAG People in the Comments?
Simple – Because it will draw direct attention to those people as Facebook will show them a notification saying that XXXX person has just mentioned them in a comment. Human nature makes people curious so they will naturally click through to see what they have been tagged in.
Pro Tip: If you are promoting a product, service or business you can ask them to TAG two people who are interested in XXX.
To give you an example, if this post was to promote a dog grooming salon you would ask them to TAG TWO dog owners who live within XXXX area.
This means that the audience of those being tagged are 100% relevant and the right target audience.
Sharing the posts will reach more people but this will be via the NewsFeed.
So, it’s important to get TWO people tagged and also a SHARE for them to qualify for your contest.
Under these instructions within your post you can also include a little information about the event, product, service, brand, or business that you’re promoting… but right at the end, remind them on how to enter again.
Also, include WHEN the winner(s) will be announced.
Having more than one chance to WIN will give you an advantage too, as people know that more than one person has a chance to win, which will increase their chances.
My viral campaign is not over yet. I will be drawing the winners tomorrow morning – About 22 hours from now.
However, here are some more screenshots of my campaign so that you can see how it progressed rapidly.

As you can see, these campaigns can catch on and go viral quickly.
It’s a great way to create FAST, massive exposure for an event, brand, product, service, or business.
If you follow my guidelines you should see great results!
To your success

Andy, thank you for your insight. I very much appreciate the fact that you’re interested in your audience’s learning and success, rather than just trying to jam another affiliate offer down our throats. Best regards – take care.
Thank you Matthew, I appreciate your comment. Glad you got some benefit from my post.
Impressive set of figures from your campaign Andy. Thanks for sharing with us
Hey, thanks Alistair.
Andy, how about software that could set-up different kinds of free contests with , say, a generic prize? I think it would be a winner!
